When should a child have their first dental visit?
Children should have their first dental visit to Dr. K Ashraf Dentistry at about two to three years old. Around this age, children’s primary (baby) teeth become erupted, or when teeth are developed and become visible along the gumline. At their first visit, our staff will explain the importance of dental care and demonstrate proper oral hygiene habits to follow at home.
What happens during a dental cleaning?
During a dental cleaning, our Waterloo-Kitchener team will provide you with quality, specialized care that you can’t get at home. We’ll begin by taking digital x-rays and scans of your teeth to track changes in the future. Our hygienists will remove any plaque and tartar build-up, and check for signs of decay or gum disease.

Then, we’ll give your teeth a thorough cleaning and polishing for a fresh, healthy smile. This is a good time to ask your dentist any questions or concerns you may have regarding your oral health, at-home care, and our dental services.

Is tooth sensitivity normal after getting a filling?
Typically, your tooth should not be sensitive to hot or cold after receiving a filling. A protective base is placed under most fillings to prevent sensitivity and strengthen your tooth. However, few patients may experience short-term sensitivity, depending on the size and deepness of the cavity.

If sensitivity or pain persists, call our Kitchener-Waterloo office at (519) 725-9585 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Ashraf. He’ll assess your tooth and get to the root of the problem.

Can I change my old silver fillings to tooth-colored fillings?
Yes, it is possible to change your old silver fillings to new, tooth-colored fillings. Contact our office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Ashraf. He’ll explain the amalgam filling removal process and what to expect with tooth-colored fillings.

Here at Dr. K Ashraf Dentistry, we provide metal-free, composite fillings to restore teeth to their original strength and aesthetic. They’re made of a tooth-colored resin to seamlessly blend in with your natural teeth, so no one will be able to tell the difference.

How do you treat gum disease?
For patients with periodontal (gum) disease, Dr. Ashraf offers a number of periodontal treatments to eliminate bacteria build-up and restore your oral health. Our treatments include scaling and root planing, gingivectomy, and gingival plastic surgery.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Ashraf will examine your oral health to determine the severity of your condition. He’ll create a treatment plan that’s tailored to your individual needs to help restore the health of your teeth and gums.

Welcome Back

Life has been anything but normal this spring and we sincerely hope you and your family are in good health. We are happy to inform you that we are now able to once again provide dental care for you and your family. The Ministry of Health has lifted the restrictions placed back in March. While many things have changed since then, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your health and safety. Our office has always followed strict infection control standards and in order to keep us all protected during this pandemic and in the future, we have updated our protocols. When we see you at your next appointment, things will be a little different.

• We will ask some screening questions before your appointment and you’ll be asked those same questions again when you’re in the office.

• You may be asked to wait outside our office or in your car and call us when you arrive and then wait for a call back to let you know when you can enter the office.

• We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the clinic. There are more dispensers around the office for you to use as needed. As well, you will be provided some gloves to wear. We recommend that you bring your own mask to wear prior to entering the clinic.

• Our waiting room will no longer offer magazines or children’s toys since those items are difficult to fully disinfect.

• Appointments will be spaced out to allow for physical distancing between patients. That might mean less flexibility for scheduling your appointment, but it will also reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time.

• You may be surprised that we’re wearing more protective gear – such as masks, face shields, gowns – than we normally do during your visit.

Rest assured, all these procedures are designed to create the safest environment for you, other patients and our team. We have undergone some renovations during this time. All operatory suites have been fully enclosed with glass windows and doors. This will ensure that all aerosols will be contained in the operatory. Prior to COVID-19, we had already installed Hepa filtration systems in all operatories and waiting areas. These systems are from Surgically Clean Air.

We look forward to seeing you again. If you have any questions, please let us know. To make an appointment, call our office at 519-725-9585 or email us at info@ashrafdentistry.ca.

Thank you for patience and loyalty throughout this ordeal. We value your trust and look forward to welcoming you back!

Sincerely,

Dr K Ashraf and the whole Dental Team.
