Sedation Dentistry in Waterloo-Kitchener

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Dr. K. Ashraf offers a solution for people who have difficulty sitting through dental procedures. Sedation dentistry is the use of anesthesia or other pharmacological agents to calm a patient prior to and during a dental appointment.

Typically, we offer sedatives to patients who have a dental phobia or anxiety due to a previous bad experience, or who are undergoing a complex procedure. This helps Dr. Ashraf and our team complete your treatment efficiently, safely, and without any interruptions, ensuring successful and lasting results.

Dental Anxiety Affects over 15% of Canadians

Does the thought about going to the dentist make you anxious? Do your palms start to sweat as you await your appointment in the waiting room? You’re not alone; Over 15% percent of Canadians report feeling either “somewhat afraid” or “very afraid or terrified” of dental visits.

Avoiding the dentist because of a dental phobia or anxiety can increase your risk of greater health issues in the future. Patients who avoid the dentist may not be aware of their possible gum disease, tooth decay, or even oral cancer without the help from a professional and an official x-ray exam.

Luckily, with sedation dentistry, we can relax your nerves and put you at ease for your dental appointment no matter what. We want each one of our Waterloo patients to feel comfortable in our office and confident in our team, whether it’s for a teeth cleaning, root canal therapy, or dental implant surgery.

Who’s a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry can benefit many of our patients as it helps diminish worries and provide you with a stress-free experience. Patients who will benefit most from sedation dentistry include those who:

  • Have a low pain threshold
  • Struggle with dental anxiety or phobia
  • Can’t sit still in the dental chair
  • Have very sensitive teeth
  • Have a bad gag reflex
  • Require a complex amount of dental work
  • Undergo multiple procedures at once
  • Have difficult responding to numbing agents

How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?

With sedation dentistry, we safely administer anesthesia through an IV right before your procedure to help dull pain or sedate your nerves. Here at Dr. K Ashraf Dentistry, we have a specially-trained anesthesiologist who controls and monitors the amount of sedation you’ll receive, ensuring safe and effective control levels.

During your appointment, you’ll feel completely relaxed and you won’t feel any pain. Most patients will doze off from the anesthesia and wake up with little to no memory of the entire procedure which helps to get over their fears.

It’s important to know that we recommend you have a friend or family member drive you home because you still may feel the effects of the medication initially after your appointment.

We use IV sedation here at Ashraf Dentistry which is administered by our anesthesiologist. He will give the sedative through an IV and you will feel it almost instantly.

Many patients will doze off during their dental procedure, which helps reduce any fear they may have because they reawaken with little to no memory of the treatment.

Welcome Back

Life has been anything but normal this spring and we sincerely hope you and your family are in good health. We are happy to inform you that we are now able to once again provide dental care for you and your family. The Ministry of Health has lifted the restrictions placed back in March. While many things have changed since then, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your health and safety. Our office has always followed strict infection control standards and in order to keep us all protected during this pandemic and in the future, we have updated our protocols. When we see you at your next appointment, things will be a little different.

• We will ask some screening questions before your appointment and you’ll be asked those same questions again when you’re in the office.

• You may be asked to wait outside our office or in your car and call us when you arrive and then wait for a call back to let you know when you can enter the office.

• We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the clinic. There are more dispensers around the office for you to use as needed. As well, you will be provided some gloves to wear. We recommend that you bring your own mask to wear prior to entering the clinic.

• Our waiting room will no longer offer magazines or children’s toys since those items are difficult to fully disinfect.

• Appointments will be spaced out to allow for physical distancing between patients. That might mean less flexibility for scheduling your appointment, but it will also reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time.

• You may be surprised that we’re wearing more protective gear – such as masks, face shields, gowns – than we normally do during your visit.

Rest assured, all these procedures are designed to create the safest environment for you, other patients and our team. We have undergone some renovations during this time. All operatory suites have been fully enclosed with glass windows and doors. This will ensure that all aerosols will be contained in the operatory. Prior to COVID-19, we had already installed Hepa filtration systems in all operatories and waiting areas. These systems are from Surgically Clean Air.

We look forward to seeing you again. If you have any questions, please let us know. To make an appointment, call our office at 519-725-9585 or email us at info@ashrafdentistry.ca.

Thank you for patience and loyalty throughout this ordeal. We value your trust and look forward to welcoming you back!

Sincerely,

Dr K Ashraf and the whole Dental Team.
