Toothpaste is a staple in our daily oral hygiene routine, yet misconceptions about its use and ingredients flourish. Drawing on an informative piece from Delta Dental, Ashraf Dentistry shares their commentary to help dissect and debunk seven common toothpaste myths. Each myth will be followed by a statement from Ashraf Dentistry, providing expert commentary and practical advice. (Source: Delta Dental, 7 Common Myths About Toothpaste, January 31, 2022, https://www1.deltadentalins.com/wellness/preventive-care/articles/toothpaste-myths-facts.html ).

Myth 1: All toothpaste brands use the same ingredients

Fact: Toothpaste composition varies significantly between brands, each formulation developed to target specific dental issues, such as sensitivity, gum health, or whitening.

Ashraf Dentistry comments, “Understanding the variety of ingredients and their purpose allows you to choose a toothpaste that best meets your dental needs. A routine visit to your Waterloo dentistry provider can give you a clear understanding of what type of toothpaste you should be using.”

Myth 2: All toothpastes contain fluoride

Fact: While many toothpastes contain fluoride, some brands offer fluoride-free options, primarily for individuals allergic to this element.

From Ashraf Dentistry: “Fluoride has been shown to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. However, we recognize that each patient’s needs are unique. When visiting with your Waterloo dentistry provider, always discuss any sensitivities or allergies; this is crucial.”

Myth 3: Toothpaste isn’t necessary after a professional dental cleaning

Fact: Even after professional cleanings and fillings, toothpaste is essential to remove daily plaque and maintain oral hygiene.

Ashraf Dentistry comments, “Post-treatment care is as critical as the treatment itself. Regular brushing with toothpaste ensures continued oral health, even after a thorough cleaning at the dentist. After all, we still eat and consume beverages after a trip to the dentist.”

Myth 4: Toothpaste alternatives, like powders and gels, don’t work

Fact: Toothpaste alternatives can be effective, provided they contain the necessary active ingredients for oral care.

Ashraf Dentistry adds, “Natural doesn’t always mean better when it comes to toothpaste. Certain essential oils and ingredients can cause mouth sores or allergic reactions. The ingredients may aggravate an underlying condition, or they may not be suitable for specific conditions. While we understand the appeal of natural toothpaste, we always suggest our patients consult with us before switching to a new type of toothpaste, especially in pediatric dentistry cases. We continue to see an increasing interest in toothpaste alternatives. While they can work, ensuring they contain ingredients beneficial to dental health, such as fluoride, is crucial. Whenever you find yourself contemplating toothpaste alternatives, always ask your dental professional.”

Myth 5: There is no difference between kids’ and adults’ toothpaste

Fact: Pediatric dentistry recommends special toothpaste for children, primarily due to fluoride content and flavor differences.

Ashraf Dentistry says, “Pediatric oral care requires a different approach. Children’s toothpaste typically has less fluoride and comes in flavors appealing to kids, encouraging regular brushing habits.”

Myth 6: Children shouldn’t use toothpaste until they’re at least 5 years old

Fact: Children should begin using a minimal amount of toothpaste from the appearance of their first tooth.

Ashraf Dentistry comments, “Early introduction of toothpaste, albeit in small, safe amounts, helps children get accustomed to the routine of oral care. Waterloo family dental care, especially in pediatrics, involves educating families about proper oral hygiene practices for their young ones. Although their teeth may be tiny, pediatric dentistry visits are essential.”

Myth 7: How you brush is more important than the toothpaste you use

Fact: Both the brushing technique and the type of toothpaste are critical for effective oral care.

Ashraf Dentistry concludes, “The right toothpaste and proper brushing techniques are both fundamental pillars of oral health. At Ashraf Dentistry, we believe in a comprehensive approach to oral care. Waterloo dentistry patients can consult us for tailored advice on brushing techniques and toothpaste selection.”

My family and I have been receiving care from Dr. Ashraf and his amazing team since we first moved to Waterloo in 2002. His assessment skills are spot on, he is gentle and is very skilled at working with anxious\nervous patients. My dental hygienist is Lin who is very knowledgeable, and passionate about her work. She is amazingly gentle yet very, very thorough when it comes to preventative dental care. She is didactic as well, taking the time to teach patients how to use certain equipment as well as addressing gingivitis in pro-active ways. We are in very capable hands.

My family loves Dr Ashraf. We've been through many dentists in many cities and he's by far our favourite one. He's always thorough and professional. His referrals are also of equal high caliber. I went to him for a root canal and a crown. I had many concerns and he addressed them all personally. He even went so far as to redo a root canal for me. Recommend.
