Diabetes significantly impacts oral health, increasing the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and slow healing. It is essential for individuals with diabetes to prioritize both blood sugar control and dental hygiene to prevent complications. (Diabetes Canada, Diabetes and your teeth, Elizabeth Soutar, April 01, 2021, https://www.diabetes.ca/about-diabetes-(3)/impact-stories/diabetes-and-your-teeth ).

Ashraf Dentistry shares, “We emphasize the strong connection between diabetes and oral health. High blood sugar not only affects your body’s ability to heal but also compromises your gum and tooth health. Proper dental care and management of diabetes are critical to avoiding severe conditions like periodontitis, which can cause long-term damage.”

Impact of Diabetes on Dental Health

People with diabetes are at a higher risk of dental problems due to increased glucose levels in their saliva. This can contribute to conditions like dry mouth, thrush, and gum disease.

Ashraf Dentistry expresses, “We frequently advise our diabetic patients to stay vigilant about changes in their mouth, such as dry mouth or increased cavities. A diabetic’s saliva tends to have higher glucose, which feeds harmful bacteria, leading to infections. At Ashraf Dentistry, we emphasize preventive care, including regular check-ups and personalized hygiene plans to mitigate these risks.”

Talk to Your Dentist

Patients with diabetes must communicate openly with their dentist about their condition and medications. Dentists might recommend more frequent visits and specialized care to prevent and address oral health problems.

Ashraf Dentistry shares, “Open communication between patients and their dental provider is vital, especially for those with diabetes. We frequently modify treatment plans based on a patient’s medical history and, when necessary, seek guidance from their healthcare providers to ensure the safest and most effective care. Frequent cleanings and tailored treatments are essential to prevent gum disease and other complications.”

Infection and Slower Healing

Diabetes raises the risk of infection and may delay healing after dental procedures. Dentists might prescribe antibiotics to mitigate these risks and ensure better recovery.

Ashraf Dentistry comments, “At Ashraf Dentistry, we understand the complexities of diabetes and its impact on healing after dental treatments. For diabetic patients undergoing surgeries or extractions, we take extra precautions, including the use of antibiotics when necessary, to ensure a smooth recovery. We also work closely with patients to ensure their blood sugar is well-controlled before and after procedures.”

Gum Disease

Those with diabetes are at a greater risk of developing gum disease, from gingivitis to severe periodontitis. Elevated blood sugar levels make it difficult for the body to combat infections, leading to thriving bacteria in the mouth.

Ashraf Dentistry expresses, “We see firsthand how uncontrolled diabetes can exacerbate gum disease. Our Toronto practice stresses the importance of managing oral hygiene and blood sugar levels to prevent serious gum infections. Regular dental visits and diligent home care are the best defense against the progression of gum disease.”

Dry Mouth

A common issue in people with diabetes is dry mouth, caused by dehydration linked to high blood sugar. A lack of saliva can result in plaque buildup and decay, making it essential to maintain hydration and blood sugar levels.

Ashraf Dentistry shares, “Dry mouth goes beyond being just an uncomfortable symptom; it increases the risk of cavities and infections. We advise our diabetic patients to stay well-hydrated and use saliva substitutes, or special mouth rinses to maintain moisture. Addressing dry mouth early can prevent larger dental issues down the line.”

Prevention

Diabetes management and good oral hygiene practices are key to preventing dental complications. Patients should also avoid sugary drinks and smoking, which can further compromise their oral health.

Ashraf Dentistry comments, “Prevention is at the heart of dental health, especially for patients with diabetes. We make sure to inform our patients at Ashraf Dentistry about the significance of maintaining a thorough oral hygiene routine, which includes using fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, and attending routine cleanings. Preventive care is the best way to maintain a healthy smile while managing the effects of diabetes.”

Make sure to take good care of your oral health, as it is essential for overall well-being, particularly for people with diabetes. By managing blood sugar and maintaining proper dental hygiene, patients can significantly reduce the risk of complications and maintain a healthy smile.

Ashraf Dentistry concludes, “At Ashraf Dentistry, we recognize the unique challenges that diabetes presents to oral health. Our clinic offers specialized care and guidance to help diabetic patients in Toronto maintain their dental and overall health. By combining diligent oral care with diabetes management, patients can significantly reduce their risk of severe dental complications.”

My family and I have been receiving care from Dr. Ashraf and his amazing team since we first moved to Waterloo in 2002. His assessment skills are spot on, he is gentle and is very skilled at working with anxious\nervous patients. My dental hygienist is Lin who is very knowledgeable, and passionate about her work. She is amazingly gentle yet very, very thorough when it comes to preventative dental care. She is didactic as well, taking the time to teach patients how to use certain equipment as well as addressing gingivitis in pro-active ways. We are in very capable hands.

My family loves Dr Ashraf. We've been through many dentists in many cities and he's by far our favourite one. He's always thorough and professional. His referrals are also of equal high caliber. I went to him for a root canal and a crown. I had many concerns and he addressed them all personally. He even went so far as to redo a root canal for me. Recommend.
