Maintaining dental hygiene is essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand the correct techniques for brushing and flossing. For expert advice on dental care in Toronto, consult your local dentist in Toronto.

Brushing:

  1. Choose the right toothbrush: Use a small-headed, soft-bristled toothbrush to easily reach all areas, including the back molars. Consider using an electric toothbrush, as its rapid bristle movements can clean deeper and more efficiently, making it more effective at removing plaque, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
  2. Use fluoride toothpaste: Fluoride strengthens enamel and prevents cavities. Apply a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to your brush.
  3. Brush for two full minutes: Divide your mouth into four quadrants, brushing each for 30 seconds. Use gentle, circular motions rather than scrubbing back and forth to avoid damaging your gums and enamel.
  4. Brush all surfaces: Ensure you brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of your teeth. To effectively clean the gum line, angle your toothbrush at 45 degrees.
  5. Brush your tongue and cheeks: Bacteria can build up on your tongue and inner cheeks, leading to bad breath. Gently brush or scrape your tongue and cheeks to remove bacteria.
  6. Brush twice a day: Brushing in the morning and before bed is essential for keeping your mouth clean and fresh.

Flossing:

  1. Use a floss pick or 18 inches of traditional dental floss: Wrap the floss around your fingers, leaving about 1-2 inches of floss to work with between your teeth.
  2. Slide the floss gently: Don’t snap the floss into your gums. Instead, gently slide it between your teeth and curve it into a “C” shape against the side of each tooth. Move the floss up and down, going beneath the gum line to remove plaque.
  3. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth: After cleaning between each tooth, move to a fresh section of floss to avoid reintroducing bacteria.
  4. Floss daily: Remember to floss daily, ideally before going to bed.

Oral Rinses and Tongue Scraping:

For teens and adults, additional steps can improve your dental care in Toronto routine:

  • Mouthwash: Choose an alcohol-free mouthwash with fluoride or antibacterial agents. After brushing and flossing, swish four teaspoons of mouth rinse for 30 seconds to kill bacteria, reduce plaque, and strengthen enamel. Mouthwash should complement dental hygiene, not replace brushing and flossing.
  • Tongue Scraping: Remember to use a tongue scraper to remove the layer of bacteria and debris on your tongue. Gently scrape from back to front. After each pass, rinse the scraper. This helps with fresh breath and overall oral health.

By following these dental hygiene practices, you can ensure long-lasting dental health. For a personalized evaluation, schedule a visit with a dentist in Toronto to keep your smile healthy and bright.

My family and I have been receiving care from Dr. Ashraf and his amazing team since we first moved to Waterloo in 2002. His assessment skills are spot on, he is gentle and is very skilled at working with anxious\nervous patients. My dental hygienist is Lin who is very knowledgeable, and passionate about her work. She is amazingly gentle yet very, very thorough when it comes to preventative dental care. She is didactic as well, taking the time to teach patients how to use certain equipment as well as addressing gingivitis in pro-active ways. We are in very capable hands.

My family loves Dr Ashraf. We've been through many dentists in many cities and he's by far our favourite one. He's always thorough and professional. His referrals are also of equal high caliber. I went to him for a root canal and a crown. I had many concerns and he addressed them all personally. He even went so far as to redo a root canal for me. Recommend.

I found Ashraf Dentistry a year ago and I absolutely love their dental clinic. Everyone is very kind and thorough. Lin is the best dental hygienist I've ever had! She takes the time to ensure I receive the care I need. Both dentists I've seen have also been very kind and wonderful at making me feel like my teeth are being taken care of. Highly recommend!
