Winter often brings cold winds, chilly temperatures, and festive gatherings. However, the season can also be challenging for maintaining oral health, especially with the potential for increased tooth sensitivity and dry mouth. Here’s how to keep your smile bright and healthy through the winter months.

Combatting Cold-Weather Sensitivity

Cold weather can exacerbate tooth sensitivity, making it uncomfortable to enjoy the season’s treats or even step outside on frosty days. Here are ways to shield your teeth from the bite of winter:

  • Use Desensitizing Toothpaste: Desensitizing toothpaste helps reduce discomfort by blocking sensations from the tooth surface to the nerve. Regular use will help alleviate cold sensitivity, allowing you to better enjoy hot and cold foods without discomfort.
  • Brush Gently: Brushing your teeth too rough or hard can wear down the enamel, exposing the sensitive layer beneath. Use a soft-bristled brush and gentle circular motions to protect your enamel and reduce sensitivity.
  • Avoid Acidic Foods and Drinks: Acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, sodas, and coffee, can erode enamel, making teeth more sensitive. Moderating your intake of these items can prevent sensitivity and keep your teeth strong.

Stay Hydrated to Prevent Dry Mouth

Winter air is often dry, which can lead to dehydration and dry mouth. Saliva is essential for neutralizing acids and washing away food particles and bacteria, so keeping your mouth moist is key to oral health.

  • Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated helps saliva production, which is essential for protecting teeth from decay. Try to carry a water bottle with you, even on colder days, to ensure you’re drinking enough.
  • Use a Humidifier at Night: Indoor heating can worsen dry mouth by lowering humidity levels. Placing a humidifier in your bedroom helps maintain moisture in the air, keeping your mouth from drying out overnight.
  • Chew Sugar-Free Gum: If you experience dryness throughout the day, try chewing sugar-free gum to help stimulate saliva production. Look for gum with xylitol, which can also help reduce bacteria that contribute to decay.

Maintain a Balanced Diet

The holiday season brings indulgences, but maintaining a balanced diet with vitamins and minerals that promote oral health is essential. Foods rich in calcium, phosphorous, and vitamins A, C, and D contribute to strong teeth and gums.

  • Choose Dairy Products for Calcium: Milk, cheese, and yogurt provide calcium, strengthening tooth enamel. Cheese, in particular, helps neutralize acids, providing an added defense against decay.
  • Eat Leafy Greens for Essential Nutrients: Spinach, kale, and broccoli are rich in calcium, vitamin C, and folic acid, which are beneficial for gum health and overall oral health.

Schedule a Winter Check-Up with Your Dentist in Toronto

Winter is an ideal time to visit your Toronto dentist to ensure your oral health is in optimal condition. A dental check-up can help detect early signs of decay or gum disease that may be worsened by the season’s challenges.

  • Professional Cleaning: During your visit, your dental hygienist can remove plaque and tartar, which are difficult to eliminate with regular brushing alone. Professional cleaning will help keep your teeth bright and your gums healthy.
  • Treatment for Sensitivity: Your dentist can provide fluoride treatments or sealants to strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity, offering additional protection throughout the winter.

Don’t Skip Brushing and Flossing

With busy holiday schedules, it’s easy to overlook daily oral care routines. However, a consistent oral hygiene routine is fundamental to keeping teeth and gums in top shape.

  • Brush Twice Daily: Brush for two minutes to remove plaque buildup and prevent cavities. Brushing before bed is especially important, as it prevents bacteria buildup while you sleep.
  • Floss Daily: Consider using floss picks if you’re on the go during holiday gatherings.

Winter dental care is about more than just preventing sensitivity; it’s also about keeping your smile bright and your oral health in check through the season’s festivities and beyond. By following these steps and visiting your dentist in Toronto, you can protect your teeth from the effects of winter weather and enjoy a radiant smile all season long.

—schedule a winter check-up at one of the trusted dental clinics near you and enjoy a bright, confident smile all season long.

My family and I have been receiving care from Dr. Ashraf and his amazing team since we first moved to Waterloo in 2002. His assessment skills are spot on, he is gentle and is very skilled at working with anxious\nervous patients. My dental hygienist is Lin who is very knowledgeable, and passionate about her work. She is amazingly gentle yet very, very thorough when it comes to preventative dental care. She is didactic as well, taking the time to teach patients how to use certain equipment as well as addressing gingivitis in pro-active ways. We are in very capable hands.

My family loves Dr Ashraf. We've been through many dentists in many cities and he's by far our favourite one. He's always thorough and professional. His referrals are also of equal high caliber. I went to him for a root canal and a crown. I had many concerns and he addressed them all personally. He even went so far as to redo a root canal for me. Recommend.

I found Ashraf Dentistry a year ago and I absolutely love their dental clinic. Everyone is very kind and thorough. Lin is the best dental hygienist I've ever had! She takes the time to ensure I receive the care I need. Both dentists I've seen have also been very kind and wonderful at making me feel like my teeth are being taken care of. Highly recommend!
