Dental restorations are crucial in modern dentistry, offering solutions to damaged or lost teeth through procedures like fillings, crowns, bridges, and implants. Suppose you’ve recently undergone tooth repair or are considering a restoration. In that case, it’s crucial to know how to maintain these dental treatments to ensure their longevity and effectiveness. Whether you’ve visited a dentist in Toronto or elsewhere, these essential care tips for your dental restorations will help keep your smile healthy and bright.

Regular Dental Check-ups

Routine visits to your dental professional are fundamental for the longevity of your dental restorations. Your dentist will clean your teeth and inspect your restorations for any indications of wear and tear. It’s recommended to have a check-up every six months, though your dentist may suggest a different schedule based on your individual needs.

Professional Cleaning

Professional cleaning is vital for maintaining the health of your restorations. Tartar build-up can affect their integrity, so having it removed regularly is essential. Dental professionals such as dental hygienists have the tools and expertise to clean around and beneath your restorations without causing damage.

At-Home Dental Care

Good oral hygiene is your first defense against issues that can compromise your dental restorations. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush for brushing, fluoride toothpaste, and daily flossing is key.

Brushing Technique

Correct brushing techniques include positioning your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and using gentle circular motions to thoroughly clean all surfaces of the teeth.

Flossing is a Must

Flossing removes plaque and trapped food debris between teeth and beneath the gum line, which toothbrushes can’t reach.

If you have a bridge or implants, use floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean effectively around the restorations.

Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods

To protect your dental restorations, avoiding or being cautious when consuming hard and sticky foods is wise. Hard foods can crack or chip restorations, while sticky ones can pull at them, potentially causing them to become loose.

Immediate Attention to Issues

If you notice any issues with your restorations, such as a loose crown or discomfort when chewing, contact your dentist immediately. Prompt attention can prevent further damage and may save the restoration.

Bonus Tips

  1. Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods: Hard foods can crack or chip dental restorations, while sticky foods can pull at them, potentially dislodging them. Foods like ice, hard candies, and sticky or chewy candy should be consumed cautiously or avoided.
  2. Use Protective Gear: Wear a customized mouthguard during sports to protect teeth and restorations from injury.
  3.  This is particularly important if you have restorations on your front teeth.
  4. Avoid Using Teeth as Tools: Do not use your teeth to open packages, cut threads, or hold objects. This can place undue stress on your restorations and natural teeth, leading to potential damage.

Dental restoration care is not overly complex, but it does require diligence. By following these tips, you can ensure the longevity and success of your dental treatments. Remember, the care you give to your restorations is just as important as the initial tooth restoration procedure itself.

For personalized advice and top-notch dental care, seek a reputable dentist in Toronto or your local area who can guide you through the specifics of maintaining your unique dental restorations. Your smile deserves the best care, and with the right dental procedures and maintenance, it will continue to shine for years to come.

My family and I have been receiving care from Dr. Ashraf and his amazing team since we first moved to Waterloo in 2002. His assessment skills are spot on, he is gentle and is very skilled at working with anxious\nervous patients. My dental hygienist is Lin who is very knowledgeable, and passionate about her work. She is amazingly gentle yet very, very thorough when it comes to preventative dental care. She is didactic as well, taking the time to teach patients how to use certain equipment as well as addressing gingivitis in pro-active ways. We are in very capable hands.

My family loves Dr Ashraf. We've been through many dentists in many cities and he's by far our favourite one. He's always thorough and professional. His referrals are also of equal high caliber. I went to him for a root canal and a crown. I had many concerns and he addressed them all personally. He even went so far as to redo a root canal for me. Recommend.

I found Ashraf Dentistry a year ago and I absolutely love their dental clinic. Everyone is very kind and thorough. Lin is the best dental hygienist I've ever had! She takes the time to ensure I receive the care I need. Both dentists I've seen have also been very kind and wonderful at making me feel like my teeth are being taken care of. Highly recommend!
